San Francisco de Asis Church, Ranches de Taos, New MexicoNestled at the base of New Mexico's tallest peak, Taos is one of the West's sweetest gems.  Named for the Indian pueblo nearby, the history of Taos is filled with legendary figures of the old west.

Kit Carson, the famed trapper and army scout that lead military campaigns against the Ute and Navajo tribes during the frontier days, is among those who have called Taos home.  These days Taos is best known as an artist colony with great downhill skiing.  The Taos Ski Area, located just north of town, is one of the most highly regarded ski areas in the Rocky Mountain region.

Among the main attractions are several museums, historic mission churches, the Taos Pueblo, the Rio Grande gorge, and dozens of art galleries.  The scenic loop drive from Taos to Red River to Angel Fire, then back to Taos -- known as the "Enchantment Circle" -- is one of the most beautiful routes in New Mexico.

Though small by big city comparisons, Taos has some 2,200 rooms in 88 hotels, motels, condominiums, and bed & breakfasts. Most of the lodging is located on Paseo del Pueblo Sur and Norte, with a few scattered just east of the town center along Kit Carson Road. The bed-and-breakfasts, on the other hand, dot some of the more colorful back-street neighborhoods.

Taos is actually a combination of several close-knit communities that, together, provide visitors with exciting venues, activities and sights. Tourists are attracted to the history of Taos that cannot be found elsewhere in the Southwest.

TAOS VACATION TRAVEL, FIND HOTELS AND PLACES TO STAYThe Pueblo, an ancient living Indian village and the old adobe buildings that now house shops and galleries, are major attractions, including the home of Kit Carson. The Native American, Spanish, and Anglo cultures are proudly preserved through art and architecture, music and dance, and food and festivals for all to enjoy throughout the year.

Mountain trails are ideal for skiing, hiking and biking. The Rio Grande offers some of the best rafting and kayaking in the region and coupled with the seasonal changes, recreational options also include ice skating, baseball/softball, tennis, swimming, fishing, hunting, camping, horseback riding, boating, golf, rock climbing, windsurfing and more.

Taos also has several fine museums and a wide choice of restaurants. The cultural diversity in Taos allows for excellent cuisine. The local favorite is green chile. Spanish and Native American food is available on the Pueblo reservation. There are approximately 80 restaurants, offering specialties such as Japanese, Chinese, French, Caribbean, barbecue, vegetarian and seafood.
