Information for Canyonlands
National Park
Canyonlands National Park (CANY) is Utah's largest national park and offers
the widest range of activities. Rafting, 4-wheeling, climbing and
hiking are all popular activities in the park. Located in the
southeast corner of the state, the Colorado and Green rivers divide the
park into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles (shown here),
the Maze, and the two river corridors.
While the districts share a
primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character and offers
different opportunities for exploration. The Needles and Island
in the Sky districts are the most visited areas. The Maze district
is the most difficult to access and is the least visited area of the
Canyonlands. Visitors usually access the riparian habitat along the
river corridors by by raft or kayak.
Expect primitive conditions when you visit Canyonlands: the nearest hotels
and restaurants
are in the nearby towns of Moab, Monticello, Green River, and Hanksville.
What you will find in the park are lots of scenic vistas, ancient Anasazi
ruins and rock art, and some of the best hiking
trails anywhere on the Colorado Plateau.
There are plenty of guides
and outfitters in Moab that can help you discover the wonders of
this magnificent park safely. Be sure to visit our Canyonlands
Nature Photo Gallery for a quick preview of what you can expect
when you include Canyonlands in your Southwest vacation plans. To
make your vacation planning easier, we've included a map
of Canyonlands and a whole page of visitor
information about the park.
Most visits to Canyonlands involve camping
along the trails, roads and rivers found here. The four districts are not
directly linked by any roads, so travel between them requires two to six
hours by car. Generally, people find it impractical to visit more than one
or two districts in a single trip. The photo above was made in the
Needles District. To reach this spot is a very long hike, however it
can also be accessed with a mountain bike or 4-wheel drive.
