The southwest corner of Utah is referred to as "Color Country" by the local population, and Bryce Canyon certainly fits the description.  In fact, it's hard to imagine a more improbable landscape than this.

Fantastically eroded shapes -- known as hoodoos -- in dramatic pastel colors, make this national park one of the most beautiful and recognizable in the U.S.  No trip to this part of Utah is complete without a visit to Bryce Canyon.  A small park by Utah standards, Bryce is actually not a canyon at all, but rather consists of a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved into the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau.

As this photo illustrates, Bryce "Canyon" is a nature photographer's dream come true.  The photo was made late in the afternoon just after a summer thunderstorm by photographer Ed Preston.  But great images can happen almost anytime of day at Bryce. Be sure to visit our Bryce Canyon Nature Photo Gallery for a preview of the fantastic scenery you can expect when you include this beautiful national park in your Southwest vacation plans.

Bryce Canyon is named after Ebenezer Bryce, the first modern-day settler in the region, who once described the area as "One hell of a place to lose a cow."  The famous western outlaw Butch Cassidy was raised in nearby Cedar City, and was known to use the rugged canyons and mesas around Bryce Canyon as a hide-out after his rough and tumble "Hole-in-the-Wall" gang pulled one of their many robberies.  Modern visitors who take time to explore this region will have no trouble seeing why it made such a great hiding place.

You'll find getting around in Bryce Canyon National Park much easier than the early settlers did.  Today, visitors can take advantage of modern hotels, and a shuttle is available to deliver you to overlooks and trailheads.  To make planning your vacation easier, we've included a complete directory of Bryce Canyon hotels, campgrounds, and great hiking trails both inside and outside of the national park.  We also have an area map of Bryce Canyon and lots of visitor information about the park.
